Charlie and Lola...

... are not my children's names.

They are the two main characters in several books by British author/illustrator Lauren Child. The first book of hers I purchased sight unseen (which I never do) based solely on the title:

I, too, do not eat tomatoes (raw, that is. I'll eat all sorts of cooked tomatoes - kind of a necessity, being married to a man who is half Italian and half Portuguese).

This book is the story of a boy named Charlie and his little sister Lola, who is "rather a picky eater".

There are two more books about Charlie and Lola, and one more forthcoming early next year:
, , and

We recently purchased a couple of these books as a birthday gift and one of them had a "now on TV" sticker. I was somewhat disheartened, believing that any adaptation for the TV would have to stink. We TiVo'd an episode and I was pleasantly surprised. The show is true in style and spirit to the books and is very well done. The segments are short, only 15 minutes, but with no commercials. Check it out here to get a feel for it (it takes a few moments to load, give it a chance).

She has a number of other books that are equally charming - the Clarice Bean books are great, very fun to read out loud.

[As far as my kids' names, I'm not entirely comfortable using their real names (I'm just a little paranoid) but I'm getting tired of DD and DS. So I'm going to use nicknames for them: Punkin and Buddy.]

Not much to show on the knitting front. I'm seaming Punkin's sweater and it's taking a while. Stupid cotton yarn shows every little imperfection and my perfectionist nature makes me pick it out and do it again. Ugh. I'm going to try to finish it tonight - we're watching Battlestar Galactica reruns, getting ready for the season to resume next weekend.

Raw tomatoes are gross. Though I've found if I chop up a plum tomato, drizzle with olive oil, minced garlic and a little salt, I can tolerate a spoonful on a little piece of toasted french bread. The books sound cute. How old is Punkin? Have you read her Charlotte's Web yet?
