The third F word

Things come in groups of three, right? Yesterday we got our third F word - family. (Am I done with bad things for a while, now that we've had three? Please tell me I'm done.)

We had a bit of drama with extended family yesterday (or should it be extended family drama? Since this isn't something that's likely to be resolved any time soon, that's probably an appropriate way to describe it). Coming on the heels of everything else that has happened this month it has left me drained and exhausted, but more determined than ever that my immediate family will have a nice holiday.

Enough about that. I actually have knitting photos for the first time in ages.

Behold, all four pieces of the flower pullover are complete:

A closeup on the sleeve:

Now all that's left to do is seam one shoulder, pick up and knit the neck trim, and finish the seaming.
However, I discovered late last night, that it has been a very long time since I worked in reverse stockinette, and I wasn't happy with the way my usual seaming technique looked on the shoulder seams. So this morning I pulled out several knitting technique books and did a little reading. Based on my reading I tried a three needle bind off on one shoulder (which required picking out the original cast off edge for both pieces) but I wasn't happy with it. So I started on the other shoulder seam and tried a backstitch seam, which I normally would never use, but I'm happier with than anything else I've tried. I think I'm going to use this seam finish and just keep moving (once I unravel the three needle bind off I tried) because I'm still working under the delusion that I will get this finished in time for Christmas. (No photos of the different seam options - dd has woken up and the knitting is shoved in the bag again).

In a small nod to reality I have realized that I probably won't get it washed and properly blocked before then - especially since, being cotton, this sweater will take forever to dry.

I'm not as delusional as the Harlot - she's in a class by herself when it comes to delusional holiday gift knitting.

An update on the post fire cleanup: the oven is still unusable. Even though I spent a day earlier in the week cleaning the oven when I turned it on it still made the room smell of burt plastic. Inside the oven doesn't smell bad, which leads me to believe that there is still ash in the vent system which is what is causing the smell. So unless I can get the hubby to help me take apart and clean the back half of the range, there won't be any holiday baking. Better for our physical health, but disappointing. It's an important part of the holidays for me.

One last note: I found out yesterday my dear friend from Writing... or Typing? will be coming for a brief visit early next month - yippee!

I got here from your comment on Yarn Harlot's blog, and wanted to offer you my sympathy, good wishes, and a suggestion for the stuffed animals. My local pet store carries a nontoxic citrus flea spray (used instead of flea bath for cats) that comes in a spray bottle. Just spray it on all the stuffed animals and move on with your life. If you want, you can give the toys a rinse after they have dried from the spray, but I don't think that step is strictly necessary. Good luck, and Merry Christmas!
