A fiber outing
Every third week I work Saturday and have Friday off. My kids' child care is paid for anyway, so I take them to school and I have an afternoon off. It is precious time, and due to a scheduling issue before Christmas last Friday was my first afternoon off in six weeks. I had a ton of things I wanted to do, way too much cleaning that I should have done, so what did I do?
Yes, that's right, I went to a yarn store.
I have purchased only one skein of yarn in the last 8 months. I already have a lot of yarn, and I know that I will buy more at Stitches West next month. But...
There is an LYS a couple towns over that I have frequented regularly for the last 9 years. They have been friendly to me once, in all that time. Unfortunately, for many years it was the closest yarn store, and it's open on Monday (I don't work on Mondays) so I would occasionally shop there anyway.
Now there is a new yarn store in the same town, and it is wonderful. They have a great selection of yarns that I have not seen in stores before, only read about on blogs. The store is light and open, the owner is friendly, outgoing and knowledgeable, and I enjoyed myself immensely. I wasn't going to buy anything, but I stopped to look at the sale bins and I spotted this

It is a multi-color lace weight yarn in shades of pink. You have to understand why this is such a strange purchase - I don't like pink. I REALLY DON"T LIKE PINK! But this yarn was so soft, and I've had a hankering lately to make this

from Sivia Harding.
The only lace weight yarn I have is grey, and the only other lace I've made was in grey, so I was thinking about picking up something with a bit more color for this shawl. But pink? I'm still shaking my head, but I still like the yarn. The only concern I have is whether or not I have enough yarn - the pattern calls for 1100 yards and the skein of yarn is 1250. Is 250 yards enough wiggle room? We'll see.
In other news, I'm making progress on the Koigu socks

I've started the heel flap. I'm not thrilled with the needles I'm using. They are size 0 bamboo needles from Crystal Palace, and they are warping from the stress and I find it very distracting. I have some size 1 birch needles from Brittany that show no signs up warping despite multiple uses; perhaps I will pick up a set of those in size 0 at some point.
One last thing: tomorrow I'm going to my first knitblogger get together - the Knit Out in Oakland organized by Rachael. Hers was one of the first knit blogs I started reading and I'm excited to meet her and other Bay Area bloggers in person. I'll have Buddy with me but Punkin will be playing with friends. Hopefully I'll remember to bring my camera!

I saw that No No Kitty laceweight the last time I was there and lusted after it, but I'm trying really hard to not buy any until I finish something. (Of course, getting a 3rd skein of SWTC Karaoke doesn't count because joining the 2nd skein I had on my Cable Scarf would result in a noticable color change, and I didn't want to waste half the skein to match it!)
The Shetland Garden shawl will look fabulous in that color. Of course, if you decide that you can't stand the pink, you can always hand it over to me...!
Where did you find the No No Kitty? I'm dying to get my paws on anything Danielle's dyed!
