Makin' it
I've spent the last week makin' stuff. Unfortunately for the blog, most of it wasn't knitted stuff.
I will start with the little bit of knitted progress that I have made.
First, the Jaywalker update

I have turned the heel and am heading toward the toe. I have tried these on and I'm a little bit concerned that they are a smidge too big in the foot part. It's hard to tell when I try it on with the needles still in the stitches, and so far I've been too lazy to slip the stitches onto ravel cord to really check the fit. I'm just chugging ahead, figuring I'll address that problem later.
Next, a finished object

The green self-patterned socks are finally finished. These socks have taken much longer than they should have, but I will save their story for another blog day. Suffice to say they are done and I am happy with them.
I've been swatching a little bit, working on a idea that's been noodling in my head and might be a good project for Stephanie's Knitting Olympics. But I'm not happy with it yet, so no pics.
I haven't made any progress on the purple Koigu socks, so no pics.
The other kinds of stuff that I've been making...

That, my friends, is 12 feet of tablecloth. Yes, 12 feet. That's a whole lot of tablecloth.
Good friends were getting a new table that starts at 6' and has leaves for 8' and 10'. I offered to make them two tablecloths - one for the smallest size and one for the largest size. I have finished the large one, have not finished the small one. This tablecloth took much longer than I would have thought, probably because it is so long. Plus, it has three lengthwise panels, all sewn together with French seams, and a wide hem with mitered corners. They were very pleased, and I was glad to be able to do something nice for them. I still have to sew the small one, but it will seem quick in comparison to the large one!
Next, a project I worked on with Punkin

In case you can't figure this one out, it is a windmill made of Tinkertoys. I didn't manage to photograph the helicopter we made first.
An ongoing project

makin' sure Buddy doesn't crack his little head open! My little guy is determined to get around in the world, only he has no sense of self-preservation. He's not only crawling and pulling himself to standing, he's cruising. (No, that doesn't mean he's out driving his car on the strip - it means he pulls himself up on the furniture and then takes steps while holding on). He's doing all this at a much younger age than Punkin did, and it's giving me fits trying to keep track of him and whether he's about to fall or not. Don't get me wrong, I know that falling is a part of life, I'd just rather avoid any ER trips until he's at least one year old.
A word about the genders here: I used to believe that males and females were basically equal, and that differences in preferences and abilities were a product of gender roles propogated by western society. I was wrong. Boys and girls are different. My daughter's verbal abilities are phenomenal - she has a larger vocabulary than some high school students and she could argue the paint off the walls. Her gross motor skills are probably slightly behind the curve - she doesn't like the monkey bars, she's not a fast runner, etc. My son at 9 1/2 months is approximately 6-8 weeks ahead of where she was at this age in terms of gross motor skills. He's much more interested in banging large objects than she ever was, and he is completely fearless. I know that some of the difference is an issue of birth order, and some of it is just because they are different people, but some of it is gender. It's fascinating to watch.
My other ongoing project, which greatly interferes with knitting and isn't very exciting so I don't have any pictures:
makin' Z's.
I got both kids to bed last night and stretched out on the sofa to look at the Knitpicks catalog for a few minutes. I woke up two hours later. Plus, Buddy has been waking up in the middle of the night lately - I was up with him from 3 to almost 5 this morning, so I'm kind of in a groggy haze much of the time. That and working both days this weekend has left little time for knitting.

The genders are different, I will agree! I was surprised how much so. We didn't encourage The Girl to play with babies or be interested in doing her hair...but she is. And The Boy is completely and totally immersed in cars and trucks and, well, anything with wheels. Mine were in the opposite order and I've noticed The Girl picked up on many things faster, but The Boy never wanted a stroller!
It would be interesting if Punkin and my Monster Teenager got into a debate. This is, of course, the child who told me years ago that "Mom, you said you'd RATHER I didn't do that. You didn't say I COULDN"T do it!" As a redeeming quality though, he wants to go with me to Stitches West in a couple weeks. Now, if only he'd work on a knitting or crochet project instead of electronic stuff!
