Go!
And they're off!
I did it. I cast on for my Knitting Olympics project last night. (*Actually, I think it was after midnight so technically it was this morning, but who cares.)
And here it is, the project I will (hopefully) be completing in the next 15 days:

The Shapely Tank Top , from White Lies Designs. The yarn is Sierra from Cascade, a lovely 80% cotton/20% wool that is similar to Cotton Fleece from Brown Sheep. The color is a medium lavender, an unusual color for me. The needles are size 7 bamboo needles from my Webs interchangeable bamboo set. (The pattern is free, go check it out).
This sweater is out of character for me, as I don't normally wear sleeveless garments. However, it is part of a bigger picture, because I also plan to make Bella to be worn over it.

The yarn for this is the same Cascade Sierra, but in a deep chocolate brown. I'm hoping that the two colors worn together will work well.

If not I can always wear Bella over a black camisole. I bought the pattern at a show probably three years ago and just haven't found the right yarn for it. White Lies Designs sells a yarn pack for the sweater, a lovely 100% cotton that they custom dye. However, the price is a bit high for me and I've always held off. Enter the 50% off SuperBowl sale last weekend!
I swatched on Friday and got a nice fabric. The row gauge was spot on but the stitch gauge was just a little off (4.75st/in instead of 5 st/in). That, plus the fact that I wanted to customize the shaping a little bit meant I was crunching numbers for a little while last night. (The pattern has an hourglass shape, with waist shaping that I like. I, however, am more of a pear hourglass shape, so I'm starting with one size, decreasing at the waist, and doing fewer increases so the bust is smaller than the hips).
Then, after adjusting the pattern and choosing a cast on method, I realized that we were going to watch Battlestar Galactica. It's one of the few shows that I really get into, and I like to be able to pay more attention than I usually do. So I set the Shapely Tank aside and worked on my Jaywalker socks instead for a while. The good news is that the second sock is basically done, all I have left to do is graft the toe and weave in a couple ends.
It's going to be a busy weekend of birthday parties and playdates for the kids, plus both kids had a bad night last night. Hopefully I'll be able to stay awake long enough to get some progress made tonight!
[*I have a confession to make: I didn't actually watch the opening ceremonies last night. Punkin had already gone to bed, we had Battlestar Galactica to watch, I didn't think I could stomach the American-centric commentary and emotional manipulation, etc. It is on the TiVo, though, so we will probably watch a little bit today.]
