Meh

We finally finished watching the opening ceremonies of the Olympics last night (I fell asleep while watching them on Saturday night. I actually asked the Hubby a question and fell asleep while answered. Funny.)

I think the best part was looking at the different costumes each nation wore, and seeing how different some countries names are in Italian and French. (Netherlands is Paese Bassi (or something like that) in Italian. I think it translates into Countries Low. How cool is that?)

However, as I expected, the commentary by Bob Costas and Brian Williams (the New Tom Brokaw) was almost more than I could stand. Brian Williams provided global political background on everything, which was kind of weird. On the one hand, I think they were probably trying to avoid the annoying "human interest story" kind of coverage they have done before which people have complained about. But on the flip side, these athletes are there to perform feats of athletic prowess, not stage a revolution or win a pointless war.

The other thing that really ticked me off was how American-centric the commentary was, and how lowest common denominator. When the Olympic team from Madagascar walked into the arena Williams actually said "and here's Madagascar, known to American children as an animated movie".

Hello, some American children actually know things about the world that they didn't learn from an animated character, and my child doesn't go to the movies. Anyone who isn't American who might be watching our coverage must be disgusted by that kind of statement and think we are all the morons that we're depicted as being.

If I hear one more word about Bode Miller I'm just going to scream. Costas and Williams were actually kind of making fun of themselves, "and here's Bode Miller, perhaps you've heard of him?" but they couldn't stop themselves from talking about him anyway.

And Luciano Pavarotti looked like someone had colored in his hair/beard/eyebrows with black magic marker. The man sure can sing, though.

[In case you hadn't noticed, I'm feeling kind of snarky today. Both kids had a bad night, which started when my daughter started howling at 10:30, right as I was getting ready for bed. I rushed into her room, scooped her out of bed when she said she needed to go to the bathroom and cracked my head on the upper bunk when I stood up. It hurt. It really hurt. And why my almost 5 year old can't get herself out of bed when she needs to use the toilet I don't know.]

I got about an inch or so done on the Shapely Tank, enough to get started on the waist decreases. Nothing worth photographing.

Maybe we'll watch some figure skating tonight, I'll bet Punkin will enjoy that. Today's my day for errands with the kids: grocery store, Target, Trader Joe's, and Michaels for supplies to make valentine's for Punkin's class. Whew.

Hi, another Marie here. I agree about Pavarotti - he must've been wearing some bad wig or toupee! NBC's coverage of the Olympics drives me crazy as well, so I mostly watch CBC instead.

You are right...Bode Miller talk is so annoying. Who freakin' cares?

And for the record, my nearly four year old won't get out of bed to go potty, either. For some reason he believes he cannot get out of bed without our permission. This has both advantages and disadvantages, as I'm sure you can imagine.
