Milestones big and small
I read once that someone had done research about differences between men and women and when they die. It turns out that women tend to die just after reaching a life milestone - a birthday, anniversary, major holiday, etc. - and men tend to die just before reaching life milestones.
It turns out that women see milestones as something to strive for, they consider it an achievement to have reached another birthday or anniversary or whatever. My grandmother died one week after her 90th birthday: she hadn't been feeling well, was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia on her birthday, and died a week later. Not a bad way to go if you ask me.
Men, however, see life milestones as a way of measuring all the things they haven't achieved, i.e. "look, I'm 90 years old and I never hiked the Grand Canyon or built my dream house - I'm a failure as a man". Interesting.
All of which I mention because I have been contemplating milestones lately. We have reached a major milestone in the life of one of my children.
Yesterday we registered Punkin for kindergarten.
I truly cannot believe that my child is going to be starting school. I can remember being in kindergarten, and somehow it's strange to me that she is at an age that I can remember being; she has moved decisively out of "baby" and is definitely now "child". It is giving me much thought, and making me feel old. (I can just imagine how my mother feels, being old enough to have grandchildren!)
On a totally insignificant note, I have completed the first Jaywalker sock. Now let's see if I can complete the second one before the 13th, to be eligible for the Jaywalker KAL prize.
I'm thinking that I'm going to skip the Knitting Olympics, but I haven't totally decided yet.
Oh, and I signed up for SockapalOOOza hosted by Alison and got my assignment yesterday. I'll get the KAL button onto the page any day now. I'm strongly considering switching to a different blogging software and I'm waiting to do a lot of work on the template until after I make the move. Which, again, will happen any day now!
