"Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore"

Believe it or not, this isn't going to be a post about some strange and surreal experience I had that reminded me of the line from the movie...

Even better, I actually went and saw the movie!

We have a local arthouse theater that specializes in showing old movie, and yesterday evening I took Punkin to see "The Wizard of Oz" in a movie theater. It was wonderful, fabulous, and so much fun. This was only her second time to see a movie in a theater (the first one being the Wallace and Gromit movie, which I was deeply disappointed by in spite of being a big Wallace and Gromit fan) and the first time I had ever see "The Wizard of Oz" in a theater (having seen it many times at home).

The theater is a restored theater that was built in 1925, complete with the organ that rises up out of the orchestra pit. The theater was packed - tons and tons of families. We sat up in the balcony and ate popcorn. Punkin enjoyed the movie, although she was pretty scared at times (and even told me at one point that she wanted to go home). We had read the book together, looked at photos of the characters so she would know what to expect, and talked about what she could do if she got scared (she sat on my lap for most of the movie) but even so, it's a pretty scary movie.

We're very selective about what Punkin watches on TV. She watches a couple of kiddie shows, a couple of cooking shows, and a couple of shows from the Discovery Channel (Dirty Jobs is one of her favorites, MythBusters is another) but almost all of her TV watching is with adult company. That way we can talk about what she's watching, make sense of things she doesn't understand, and fast forward through the commercials (thank FSM for TiVo!) She has watched very few movies, the only Disney movie she's watched is The Aristocats, and she hasn't been exposed to a lot of scary visual images (and hopefully not very many negative/degrading/stereotypical female characters). So I wasn't at all surprised that she was scared, but I think she has the coping mechanisms to deal with it pretty well.

Afterward we went down to the orchestra level and watched the organist play, which was really cool.

I have been knitting, just still no photos. Soon, I hope!

Wow - fun!

I remember getting scared by TWoO. I also remember one time my mom's reaction to me wanting to watch it on its yearly airing on Good Old Network TV was, "Are you going to cry at the end AGAIN?"
